National University awarded $100K grant for ‘memory of war’ project

A Vietnam War memorial at Camp Pendleton FIle photo courtesy of st Marine Division National University was named a recipient Thursday of a grant to create discussion groups on how we remember and memorialize war The grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities is part of million in awards broadcasted Thursday for humanities projects across the country National University s project is titled Legacies of War Memorials and Memories of the American Civil War the Vietnam War The one-year project begins with a -hour preparatory session for six discussion leaders followed by two five-month discussion groups for up to participants per group The plan is to focus on the memory of war and society memorialization According to the NEH projects received grant funding as part of its A More Perfect Union initiative to explore America s story and celebrate its cultural heritage in advance of the th anniversary in of the signing of the Declaration of Independence The National Endowment for the Humanities is proud to patronage the institutions and individuals who deepen our understanding of the past through rigorous scholarly research enrich constituents knowledge through educational programs exhibitions and documentaries and safeguard our nation s cultural heritage for future generations NEH Acting Chairman Michael McDonald explained in a comment Other California awards went to Headfirst Arts Media Inc to produce a documentary about the life of Rywka Lipszyc a -year-old Orthodox Jewish girl whose diary was revealed atAuschwitz in and to the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles to digitize and catalogue approximately items from its permanent collection
